Until I started to play for
myself was there a song to be heard...
As far
back as I allow my mind to wander (and wonder), I've always
flitted around on the keyboards wherever and whenever I could
find one.
Self-taught with a pretty good ear has
kept the surprises fresh and bountiful. While mom
shared her early childhood training, entertaining
to my great delight on an inexpensive
upright in our modest (and snug) living room, for me, the
spring in the keys were sticky going down
and slow enough coming up, I just couldn't
(wouldn't) adjust, but was okay as mom's audience (sometimes
the only one).
Finding this less than smooth action of
the keyboard not very accommodating and thus, not what or how
envisioning spending my time, I would
only infrequently sit down on the cushionless, wooden bench
(after awhile, cold and steel) and peck, sometimes with one
finger, sometimes two,
seldom with both hands but nevertheless, a beginning and
forever grateful (and graceful)
despite my temperamental rants.
Yet keeping the spark active was really only as far as I cared
to walk; a church, a school music room (where I learned the
trumpet), a college
auditorium, a friendly music store or a friend's home - a tap
here a chord there and now using
two hands with more fingers than before.
Not until the twilight of my later years
have I immersed myself in the play and oh how bright the light
is shinning. Using a digital upright version
of the instrument but with key action (and
my frame of mind) much more to my liking and receptivity, I
sail across many seas where turbulent
waters seldom intervene yet the vastness
of the oceans always riding the crest of overwhelming the
senses.
Many doors with indescribable vistas have
opened wide. I can see what I believe to be the rest of
my life fulfilled over and over whenever
sitting down at the bench (now with a
cushion) composing what has become pure magic from the
imagination to the depths of my soul.
From me to whomever carries and touches kindred spirits
